MBA Interview Tips: How to Impress the Socks Off Your Interviewers During Your MBA Interview

Would you like to get into a top MBA program? You know that can be a challenge, but it’s not impossible. For some help with improving your odds, check out these seven tips! One of the biggest hurdles is the MBA interview. Getting to the interview is quite an accomplishment. But you can still blow it during the actual interview if you make some very common mistakes.

So how do you ace your MBA interview? Here’s a big key: Come across as an asset to the program. And one of the ways to do that is to be confident and enthusiastic without appearing desperate. That can be easier said than done. A lot of things that you may do to impress your interviewers can actually make you look desperate.

So here are a few tips for how you can project that air of confidence:

1) Don’t talk too much — or too fast

Confident people don’t babble on and on. They also don’t feel the need for speed.

2) Be enthusiastic yet slightly detached from the outcome

Remember this. You’d like to go there and you hope you’ll get in. But if they don’t take you, it’s not the end of the world. Another program could actually turn out to be an even better fit for you.

3) Do something that lowers your stress

Try a cup of herb tea, take a dozen or two deep slow breaths, go for a walk in the park, or do something else that makes you relaxed. Just don’t get too relaxed. Be sure to skip the Valium.

4) Tell them why they’re a good fit for you

Focus on telling them why you are interested in their school and why you think you are a good fit for them and why they are a good fit for you. Base it on factual information, not on platitudes and clichees. So tell them you like certain classes they teach, or certain programs they offer. Be very interested in the work of some of their faculty members and tell them how much you’re looking forward to studying with them.

5) Absolutely no begging

Don’t even think of begging and getting emotional. That will put you into the reject pile faster than you can say “Pretty please.”

6) Do practice interviews

Here’s the biggest secret: Do practice interviews. Yes, with real MBA programs. Apply to a few extra ones that you’re not desperate to get into and get in a few interviews where you’re less nervous. By the time the big schools come calling, you’ll nail the interviews with confidence.

7) Get more secrets

Don’t stop while you’re ahead… Seek out more secrets and put them to use.
